First of all—thanks for letting me call you Grandpa. My maternal grandfather died before I was born and my paternal grandfather died when I was eight, so it’s been a long time since I’ve had a Grandpa in my life. Grandparents are important characters in the narrative of a human being, playing the critical role of keepers of memory and custodians of legacy.
You’ve only been my grandfather-in-law for a little over a year, but in my years of getting to know you following my engagement and marriage to Ethan, I’ve learned a lot from you.
I’ve learned how to welcome newcomers into a family and how to create a culture of learning from one another that is ever evolving and expanding. You have made living a legacy your lasting gift to your family and I am so honored and proud to now be included in this lucky group of people.
Thank you, Grandpa.
